What the pH Data Revealed
Objective measurement provided the clarity Rebecca needed to optimize her treatment
Two weeks after returning the recorder, Rebecca met with her gastroenterologist to review the pH data. The results were illuminating.
Her total acid exposure time was 8.2% of the monitoring period, significantly above the normal threshold of 4%. Her DeMeester score was 28, well above the pathologic cutoff of 14.7. The data confirmed inadequate acid suppression despite twice-daily PPI therapy.
More importantly, the symptom correlation analysis showed that 85% of her documented symptoms occurred during actual acid exposure events. This confirmed that her symptoms were truly reflux-related, not functional or psychological.
The pH pattern revealed significant nocturnal acid exposure, suggesting that her evening PPI dose was wearing off before morning. Her physician recommended switching to a different PPI with longer duration of action and adjusting the timing of her doses.
Rebecca also learned that three of her documented symptom episodes occurred when her pH was normal, suggesting that non-acid reflux or esophageal hypersensitivity might be contributing factors. This explained why some symptoms persisted despite medication.
Armed with this objective data, Rebecca and her physician developed a targeted treatment plan: medication adjustment, timing optimization, and continued lifestyle modifications. If symptoms persisted after three months, they would discuss surgical options with confidence that the pH data supported the diagnosis.
